Sharp LED: LEDs the future of lighting

Technological advances:

Sharp LED: LEDs the future of lighting

Improved economics:

Dramatic improvements in the performance of LEDs are making them increasingly attractive:

The cost-performance ratio of LED lighting is becoming commercially viable:

Green lighting:

Government regulations and an increasing awareness of the need for climate-friendly technology are

favouring LED lighting:

  • LEDs are more reliable and long-lasting than other light sources
  • Significant improvements in lumen/watt performance
  • White light quality and stability close to incumbent technology
  • Total cost of ownership (TCO) savings through avoidance of maintenance and energy savings
  • Lower initial fixture cost through more lumens for your money
  • U. S. Energy Star requirements for energy-saving devices
  • no lead, mercury or other heavy metals are included
  • Phasing out of incandescent bulbs in Australia & the EU
  • There are good reasons why the time is ripe for LEDs to break into general lighting applications:

Colour rendering:

More natural colours

The colour rendering index (CRI) is a quantitative unit of measure that defines how well a light source reproduces the colours of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. The CRI is based on a 0–100 scale. The higher the colour index, the better colours appear.

High CRI applications

  • Secondary optics are required to turn an LED into a lighting fixture or luminaire.
  • To create the desired atmosphere in a room you need to generate contrasts, e. g. through highlighting certain areas.
  • To achieve good lighting you have to focus and direct the rays of light in a certain direction.

Thermal Management: cooling is crucial

Thermal Management: cooling is crucial

ZENIGATA LED

Most of the heat generated by an LED is transferred through the package via conduction. Thus, thermal management is important because excess heat directly affects an LEDs short- and long-term performance.

The short-term, and reversible, effects of excess heat are colour shifts to red and reduced light output while

the long-term effect is faster lumen degradation and thus a shortened lifetime.
